Erick Berglund, PhD (CEO)
Dr. Berglund joined Vaxiva Biosciences in early 2007 bringing with him
over 20 years of experience in both academic and industrial life
science areas. Dr. Berglund is originally from the US but
has been in Japan since 2004 working first in the licensing and
strategic development group of Kyorin Pharmaceuticals, a mid-sized
Japanese pharmaceutical firm, then as business development director of
Innovatis Pharma, a bioventure based in Tokyo. Prior to
arriving in Japan, Dr. Berglund worked for over three years with
Trillium Medical Ventures, a biotechnology consulting firm based in
NYC. Dr. Berglund also served as a scientific specialist at
Lahive & Cockfield LLP, a law firm in Boston, Mass. that
specializes in IP and trademark issues. During that time, Dr.
Berglund successfully completed the USPTO exam to become a registered
US patent agent. In 1999, Dr. Berglund received his PhD in
Biochemistry from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität for research
on transcriptional mechanisms completed as a scientist at
Hoechst-Marion-Roussel (now Sanofi-Aventis) in Frankfurt,
Germany. Prior to his doctoral work, Dr. Berglund completed a
Masters of Science in Biochemistry at Boston University Medical Center
in Boston, Mass.

Takeo Matsumoto, PhD
Dr. Matsumoto has over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology and
pharmaceutical industries. His current activity is at Biotech
Healthcare Partners, a life-science investment and advisory group,
based in Tokyo Japan, where he has served as a General Partner for 7
years. He currently hold Director and Advisory Board roles for
several biotechnology companies in Japan. Prior to this,
Dr. Matsumoto was General Manager of the life sciences division of NOF
Corporation, a diversified multinational healthcare and pharmaceutical
products company. Before the General Manager role at NOF, he was
Director of the Biomaterials Division and Vice President of U.S.
Operations at NOF, where he was responsible for the development of key
technologies in medical devices, immunoassay systems, an artificial
pancreas, drug delivery systems and polymeric drugs. Dr. Matsumoto
holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Kagoshima University and a
B.E. in chemical engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
Professor Nikolai Petrovsky, MD, PhD
Dr. Petrovsky is a Professor of Medicine at Flinders Medical
Center/Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia where he serves as
Director of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department. He also
serves as the Research Director of Vaxine, Ltd, Vaxiva’s strategic
partner. Prof. Petrovsky graduated in Medicine in 1982 and
subsequently trained as a specialist in Endocrinology at the Royal
Melbourne Hospital. In 1998, he obtained a PhD from the
University of Melbourne for work on the immunology of type 1 diabetes
performed at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
He has been a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors
for over 15 years. Until his recent move to Adelaide he was Director of
the National Health Sciences Centre (NHSC) in Canberra.
Prof. Petrovsky has authored over 70 peer reviewed scientific papers
and has held executive positions with various national and
international scientific bodies, including Australian Diabetes Society,
Australasian Society for Immunology and International Immunomics
Society.
